A Costly Catastrophe: Orillia Home Encountered Water Damage

Water damage can be costly and often difficult to endure. It can cause long-term structural and extensive property damage, leading to expensive repairs or replacements. Homeowners may have to pay for removing moisture, mould remediation, carpet replacement, and furniture restoration.

Additionally, water damage can lead to long-term health issues due to mould spores released into the air. The problems can add up quickly, often creating an overwhelming financial burden for homeowners.

PuroClean of North Simcoe and Muskoka understands the stress and worry that comes with a flood, fire, and other damage to your home or commercial property. As a leading provider of property emergency services in our area, we will respond quickly to mitigate the loss and manage the restoration project through to completion.

A Sump Pump Setback

Recently, our office received a call from an insurance broker that referred us to a claim for an Orillia home. Our client was away at their vacation home upon learning that their primary residence experienced severe water damage. A sump pump discharge pipe disconnected, flooding their 1,800-square-foot basement with 24 inches of water.

The category three water loss.

According to the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), a water restoration of this severity is a category three loss. A category three loss requires an extensive restoration process.

Our Team at Work

Although the service request came in after hours, our technicians responded to the scene immediately. Due to the severity of the damage, we knew time was of the essence.

The first step in the mitigation process was thoroughly extracting water from the basement to ensure no water remained. We used our specialized PuroClean equipment to quicken the extraction process, which our skilled team completed late into the evening.

Then, our contents and pack-out crew transferred the contents from their basement. This process entails removing personal belongings from the affected area and itemizing them in our office, sorting what can be salvageable and repaired or what must be discarded.

The water damage affected the contents in the home.

After the contents were securely and safely taken out of the basement, we dried and removed the saturated drywall and replaced it with new drywall. The house had an insulated concrete form (ICF) foundation, and the building code requires drywall over the insulation.

With the drywall replaced, the final step in the mitigation process was cleaning and sanitizing the basement. We used PuroClean’s advanced cleaning and sanitizing solutions to remove any remaining mould, mildew, odours, and bacteria. This also limits potential mould growth in the future. We worked quickly and efficiently to restore the basement to a safe, healthy condition.

The drywall was replaced, mudded, and sanded.

Despite the intense category three loss, our crew completed the job in three weeks. Our technicians did an incredible job with processing and documenting many contents while promptly completing the mitigation work. The insurance agency was highly impressed with our performance and swift turn-around time.
