How to Prepare for Earthquakes

How to Prepare for Earthquakes

Earthquakes can strike anywhere in Canada at any time. Due to their unpredictability, it’s vital to be prepared in advance to minimize damage, prevent injuries, and ensure your family’s safety. Here’s what you need to do to get ready for an earthquake:

Before an Earthquake: Preparation is Key

  1. Create an Emergency Kit
Your emergency kit should last at least three days and include essentials such as water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, first aid supplies, and extra batteries. Keep it in an easily accessible location.
  2. Establish a Family Emergency Plan
Plan a meeting spot outside your home where everyone can gather if separated. Ensure everyone knows how to communicate during an emergency, especially if phone lines are down.
  3. Inspect Your Home
Ensure your home is earthquake-resistant by checking that structures are anchored securely to their foundations. Inspect crawl space walls for stability, and make sure heavy items like bookshelves, mirrors, or light fixtures are properly secured.
  4. Practice Safety Drills
Everyone in your household should practice the “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” drill regularly. Find a sturdy piece of furniture or an interior wall to take cover under, and practice dropping to the ground, covering your head and neck with your arms.

During the Earthquake: Stay Calm and Safe

  1. Drop, Cover, and Hold On
Once the shaking begins, drop to the ground, take cover under sturdy furniture or against an interior wall, and protect your head and neck.
  2. Stay Inside
Stay indoors to avoid falling debris or trees. Stay away from windows, glass, and any other items that could fall, like light fixtures or shelves.
  3. Stay Away from Doorways
Contrary to popular belief, doorways do not provide sufficient protection. Stay under sturdy furniture or near an interior wall.
  4. If You’re Outside, Move to Open Space
Move away from buildings, utility wires, and streetlights. Drop, cover, and hold on until the shaking stops.
  5. If You’re in a Vehicle, Stop Safely
Pull over to a safe area, away from trees and buildings. Remain inside the vehicle until the shaking stops.

After the Earthquake: Assess and Act

  1. Evacuate if Safe
Once the shaking stops, locate a safe exit and evacuate the building. Stay away from damaged structures and fallen debris.
  2. If Trapped, Stay Still
If you’re trapped, don’t attempt to move. Use your cell phone to call for help or make noise by tapping a pipe or wall to signal rescuers.
  3. Driving Precautions
If you’re driving, proceed cautiously and avoid roads or bridges that may have been damaged during the quake.
