A Sewer Line Ruptures and a Muskoka Apartment Gets the Worst of It

It was at the end of the workday when we received an urgent call. A sewer line in the Village of Rosseau, District of Parry Sound, had backed up, causing the toilet in an apartment to overflow and leak all over the floor.  This call was regarding one unit which suffered exceptionally from this sewage backup. So, our crew went out after hours and immediately got to work to help this tenant clean up their house.

Cleaning The Sewage

Upon our arrival, our team found the bathroom to be in a terrible situation. The sewage had backed up and it was pouring out of the toilet. Sludge was falling down the sides of the bowl and coming up from the shower floor. Incredibly, the sewage even made its way down the hallway, but our crew managed to stop it before leaking into the kitchen. This apartment and its residents had definitely seen better days.Initially, our crew installed air scrubbers and containment barriers to separate the affected areas from the non-affected areas. When sewage is involved, the cleanup is classified as a biohazard job. So, our technicians use full PPE the entire time. After containment, cleanup commenced, and our technicians installed drying equipment. Following the drying, the areas needed to be sanitized and deodorized.It is important to note that mould growth can begin between 24 and 48 hours once water damage has occurred. With this in mind, the crew uses their equipment to determine if there is mould already growing behind the drywall in the bathroom and the hallway. If mould is found, we will remove it completely and reconstruct the affected areas.After the initial clean-up was completed, some additional removal and reconstruction was required, including replacing the vanity and surround shower liner, flooring, and lower portion of the walls. So, our designer will work with the homeowner to purchase a new vanity for the bathroom.
