Cottage Conundrum: Demolition Near Parry Sound After Lightning Sparks Fire
Sometimes, natural disasters, such as lightning strikes, can cause irreparable property damage requiring demolition. A fire can quickly spread, compromising much of a building’s structural integrity, especially if left unattended or unnoticed in a rural location.
Restoration can be too costly, dangerous, or impractical in such cases. That’s why demolition is sometimes necessary, allowing the opportunity to rebuild anew. However, even demolition can have its own set of challenges.
A Lakeside Demolition Project
We recently received a call about a summer cottage on Harris Lake that lightning had struck. Unfortunately, a fire ignited, leaving much of the residence a charred mess. Since it was only accessible by water and had no running water or electricity, firefighting efforts were hampered.
After the fire subsided, we arrived on the scene and performed an extensive inspection. Our team determined it wasn’t practical to save the cottage and recommended a complete demolition. The owner and insurance adjuster agreed with our assessment, allowing us to start our work.
The cottage suffered catastrophic damage, leaving us with only one course of action: demolition.
Since the cottage was boat access only, with limited docking and landing sites, we couldn’t utilize any heavy equipment or machinery. This meant our team of six, which included IICRC-certified technicians, could only use hand tools. Undeterred, our team tore down the structure, removing debris and building materials. Waste was transported daily from the demolition site using a barge. It was slow but steady progress!
Waste was transported away daily through the use of a barge.
Our dedicated team persevered and completed the demolition by hand in only a week, leaving the land ready for a cozy, new cottage. We couldn’t have done it without your fantastic work, team!
