Fireworks Safety – How to Stay Safe Around Fireworks
How to Safely Store Fireworks
- Fireworks should be kept outside the home and away from living areas. A locked storage shed is ideal. Keeping fireworks dry is essential, as well.
- To ensure the fireworks do not get damp, they should be wrapped tightly in sealed plastic bags. A packet of silica gel desiccant should be put in the fireworks containers.
- If the storage area is not prone to humidity, fireworks can be kept in their original packaging or in a fireproof container.
- Fireworks or other explosives must never be stored in self-storage units.
- In addition, fireworks should be kept away from heat or ignition sources such as water heater, as well as from flammable materials like oil or paint.
- If small children or pets have access to where the fireworks are stored, the fireworks should be locked in a cabinet or other container.
How to Safely Use Fireworks
- Children must never be allowed to handle fireworks, including firecrackers and sparklers. Sparklers burn at about 1,000 degrees Celsius and account for more than one-quarter of fireworks injuries.
- Using fireworks when inebriated or impaired in any way is to be avoided.
- Fireworks should be used outside, in a clear area, and away from homes, trees, vehicles or other objects.
- The fireworks display should be postponed if it’s windy. The wind can push sparks into nearby buildings, trees, or grass, and cause fires.
- In case of accidents, there should be a bucket of water and a hose handy.
- Those who are lighting fireworks should wear safety glasses.
- Fireworks should not be carried in pockets as friction may set them off.
- Fireworks must not be held in hand when igniting the fuse.
- Shooting fireworks in plastic, metal or glass containers must be avoided.
- Fireworks should never be thrown or pointed at someone. Spectators should keep a safe distance from the shooter.
- Only one firework at a time should be lighted.
- Malfunctioning fireworks or pieces of fireworks must never be relighted or picked up.
