8 Backyard Dangers that Can Be Prevented
Spending time in the backyard is a simple and common joy in life. However, accidents can happen at any time, even in the backyard. Here’s a list of the most common backyard dangers to keep in mind:
- Garden Tools
- Backyard work can leave homeowners exhausted and they might forget to gather the tools and secure them. The danger is that someone might slip or fall on a tool and get injured. Backyard tools should be removed and put away after using them.
- Slippery Grass
- Walking on the grass feels good, but it won’t end well if the grass is wet or full of weeds. Slips are common in these conditions. It’s why homeowners should weed the backyard and walk carefully when the grass is wet to reduce the chance of slipping.
- Pesticides
- Using strong pesticides can be dangerous to people and should be avoided. These chemicals can contaminate the air in the backyard for days and can even rub off on kids and pets. Children are more susceptible than adults to the effect of pesticides because their immune system is weaker.
- Big Umbrella
- Having a big umbrella in the backyard may not seem dangerous, but it can be blown off balance by the wind, causing havoc in the backyard. To avoid injuries (and embarrassment), it should be reinforced with a patio umbrella weight, a cantilever umbrella base or an umbrella sand bag.
- Dog Poop
- Although some types of feces are natural fertilizers, dog poop is not. It’s actually filled with dangerous bacteria. Some of these bacteria can enter the skin imperceptibly. Dog owners should always clean up after their dog and avoid being barefoot in the backyard.
- Ticks
- Ticks are well known for carrying the Lyme disease bacteria. Those who have exposed their skin to grass should check for tick bites regularly, as well as for bull’s eye rashes. To help prevent ticks in the backyard, the grass and weeds should be trimmed regularly, and wood piles should be prevented.
- Backyard Fires
- Grills, fire pits, and patio heaters are common dangers in the backyard. To keep backyard parties and get-togethers safe from activities that involve fire, follow these backyard fire safety tips. Don’t let fire foil the fun.
- Swimming Pool
- Swimming in the pool is a lot of fun, but safety always comes first! Besides the danger of drowning, especially if there are kids in the pool, electrical shocks are also a risk. Overtreating the pool with chemicals also presents a danger.
