How to Safely Operate Fire Extinguishers
A small fire can spread through a whole building in a matter of minutes. Portable fire extinguishers are essential tools for stopping fires, but they must be used very carefully and as fast as possible. Below are a number of important safety guidelines for using fire extinguishers:
- The fire department should always be called first.
- Fire extinguishers should only be used to put out small fires in confined areas, not large fires.
- Fire extinguishers must only be used if it’s safe to approach the fire and if the distance from the fire is safe.
- Property owners should choose a multi-purpose fire extinguisher (that can be used for all types of fires, including electrical) and check that it has been approved by an independent testing laboratory.
- Everyone in the home who is old enough should learn how to use fire extinguishers and where they are located.
- Fire extinguishers should be placed on every level of the home and close to exits, if possible.
- Every family must have a fire escape plan that includes instructions about fire extinguishers.
- After using a fire extinguisher, it should be replaced or recharged immediately to be prepared in case another fire breaks out.
How to operate a fire extinguisher:
- The pin, which is located at the top of the extinguisher, should be pulled to break the seal.
- The nozzle must be pointed towards the base of the fire with one hand, after which the handle can be squeezed slowly with the other hand.
- The nozzle should be swept from side to side until the fire is out.
Property owners should also consider installing smoke alarms, fire sprinklers and carbon monoxide detectors in their properties for increased safety. The PuroClean team stands ready to provide professional restoration services to any property affected by fire, water or mould damage.
