10 Unexpected Areas in the Home that Require Cleaning
In most homes, there are numerous areas that require cleaning besides the most obvious ones, such as floors and windows. These areas are easy to overlook, but can harbor the same amount of dust and dirt. Here are some unexpected items and areas that should be included in a home cleaning schedule:
1. Decorative pillows – all sorts of particles, such as dust mites and dead skin, accumulate into decorative or throw pillows. These particles can be removed by running the vacuum’s upholstery attachment over pillows. Alternatively, the pillow covers can be laundered according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
2. Curtains and upholstery – the vacuum can be used to clean the dust and other allergens that may be hidden in these fabrics. Washing or cleaning may also be an option, but the manufacturer’s label should be checked first.
3. Coffeemaker – over time, hard water and brewing residue build up in the coffeemaker, altering the taste and quality of the coffee. The coffeemaker can be cleaned by running a mix of one part white vinegar, one part hot water. The machine should be paused halfway through the cycle for one hour. Running hot water will wash away the smell of vinegar.
4. Dishwasher – it may not seem likely, but dishwashers do require periodic cleaning, as they can trap food leftovers, hard water build-up, mould or soap scum. The filter should be removed and cleaned, then a wash cycle with baking soda or a heavy-duty cleaning agent should be run.
5. Washing machine – these appliances are susceptible to mould and mildew and will require cleaning if clothes smell musty after a wash. The problem can be solved by running a hot cycle with white vinegar and baking soda.
6. Behind and under major appliances, such as the refrigerator, washing machine and oven, where dust and dirt will accumulate. These appliances must be moved carefully when cleaning, preferably in the spring and fall.
7. Switches, handles and knobs – due to their frequent usage, these items require cleaning with a disinfectant from time to time, especially those in the bathroom and kitchen.
8. Pet items – the items that pets use (i.e. toys, bed) may be a breeding ground for bacteria, and even for ticks or fleas. The pet bed should be cleaned in the washing machine. Toys or other pet items can also be cleaned in the washing machine, after being placed in a net first.
9. Ceiling fans – the blades on the ceiling fan can be tricky to clean, so an extended-reach duster should be used. Another option to consider is to use an old pillow case in which the dust can be trapped.
10. Cleaning tools and products – obviously, the utensils for everyday cleaning, such as brooms, brushes or plastic scrapers, will become dirty after a while if they aren’t cleaned. It’s a good idea to clean spray bottles, as well.
