How to Conserve Heat in the Home during Winter
During winter, many of us are thinking about cost-efficient ways to keep our homes warm. Home insulation helps reduce the energy required to heat up a home, but there are many other ways to achieve that. Below are some of the tricks to help homeowners reduce the energy bill during winter:
- 1. Closing the curtains at night. Curtains prevent cold air from entering and radiant heat from escaping. If it’s particularly cold outside, purchasing insulated curtains should be considered. Curtains can also be placed in front of doors to add another layer of protection.
- 2. Letting sunlight in during the day. If the sun’s rays are hitting the windows, the curtains should be opened to allow the light to come into the home and warm it up. However, if sunlight isn’t directly passing through the windows, opening up the curtains has little effect.
- 3. Closing rooms that are not in use to save energy. The heat should be turned off in these rooms, if possible. All exterior and interior doors in the home must be closed as tightly as possible to reduce draft and prevent heat loss.
- 4. Sealing up gaps and cracks, commonly found at doors and windows, with weather stripping. Homeowners should inspect their attic and basement for leaks and seal them with sealants such as caulk.
- 5. Using a programmable thermostat to control the temperature in the home. This device will help save on the energy bill by automatically lowering the temperature during the night or when the occupants leave the home.
Winter is also the time to be more cautious about fire hazards. Heating equipment safety tips can be found here. The PuroClean team is ready to provide professional restoration services to any property affected by fire, water or mould damage.
