Backyard Fire Safety Tips for Homeowners
Spending time in our backyard is one of the simple pleasures of life. However, not all good things come without risks. In the backyard, grilling and using fire pits and patio heaters pose the risk of fire and related injuries. With this in mind, here are key tips to prevent accidental fires in the backyard:
Grilling
- Propane and charcoal barbeque grills should be used outdoors only.
- The grill should be placed well away from the home and deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
- Children and pets must be kept at least one metre away from the grill area.
- Any grease and fat buildup must be removed from the grills. Grease and fat burn quickly and can cause burns or fires.
- Someone must always supervise the grill.
- Charcoal grill should only be lighted with either charcoal starter fluid or a charcoal chimney starter (the latter uses paper as a fuel).
- Charcoal fluid must be kept out of the reach of children and away from heat sources.
- After the grilling is done, the coals should be left to completely cool before disposing in a metal container.

Fire Pits
- Flammable materials and fluids, such as charcoal and gasoline, must be kept well away from the fire pit.
- Gasoline, alcohol, kerosene, and other combustible liquids must never be used to light or relight pit fires.
- The pit should be placed at least three metres away from any structures, fencing or other flammable materials.
- The pit should be placed on a level surface and out from under tree branches or electrical wires.
- Kids should not be allowed to use or play with the fire pit. Children and pets must be kept at a safe distance away from the fire pit.
- Those who are using the fire pit, should not wear flammable or loose-fitting clothing.
- To maintain the fire pit, it is best to use seasoned hardwood. Burning trash, leaves, paper, cardboard or plywood – as well as soft wood such as pine or cedar – should be avoided.
- The fire pit should not be overloaded.
- A fire extinguisher, bucket of water or garden hose should be kept nearby in case of an emergency.
Patio Heaters
- Patio heaters are fueled by liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) that can be dangerous if improperly used.
- Patio heaters are designed for outdoor use in well-ventilated areas. They must never be used indoors under any circumstances.
- Using patio heaters when it is windy should be avoided. Wind can blow out the flame and tip over the patio heater.
- Children must never operate patio heaters.
- Before changing the gas cylinder, the tap must be off.
